Villagers who share the giant panda’s habitat mean no harm to their furry neighbors. Saving wildlife, however, takes a backseat when children are cold and hungry. Writer Vaclav Smil spoke to a peasant farmer who argued that the land is there to be used. “If there’s a mountain, we’ll cover it with wheat,” the man said. “If there’s water to be found, we’ll use it all to plant rice.”9

The challenge is clear. If the world wants to save the giant panda, there is work to be done.
